Travelling to Door County

Door County

Located on a 75-mile peninsula and surrounded by the waters of Green Bay on the west and Lake Michigan on the east, Door County has more than 250 miles of picturesque shoreline, sandy beaches, rocky bluffs and large tracts of undisturbed woodlands. Ten lighthouses still guard the harbors and the more than 40 islands of the county.

Tourists first came to Door County in the 19th century on schooners before there were roads. Much of Door County’s beauty and character has since been preserved in county and state parks, wildlife refuges, and private preserves, sanctuaries, and trusts. Door County emerged as an art colony early in the 20th Century, and out of it grew Peninsula School of Art.

Throughout the quaint harborside towns and the pastoral interior dotted with picturesque farms and orchards, quality art galleries and studios reflect Door County’s deserved reputation for culture in the country. The rich performing arts scene–from classical and jazz music to renowned theater troops–garners national attention.

For your family, companions or during non-School time, Door County’s state and county parks offer some of the best hiking and biking opportunities to be found in the Midwest. Golfing, horseback riding, kayaking, great fishing, cherry picking, shopping and scores of festivals go hand in hand with fabulous restaurants and relaxing accomodations.
