Through slide presentations, demonstrations and one-on-one instruction, Rhonda will guide you through the process of creating a fine colored pencil drawing. Experience
Every morning, Tom will conduct exercises and demonstrate techniques used to depict "the element of the day." During the demo, you are welcome to paint along. In the afternoons, you will paint a scene practicing and refining the technique of the morning’s demonstration. You may work from your own reference photographs or those provided by Tom. Experience
Sally will demonstrate how to mix, blend, and float paint in an egg tempera emulsion, using large volumes of water at any given time. Cynthia, an experienced painter, teacher, and master gardener will offer her approach to capturing the fabulous and fleeting moments of plants and gardens. Plants and gardens are among the most popular topics for both traditional and contemporary painters.
Experience
Weather permitting, we will paint outdoors in beautiful local gardens for portions of each day. You will experience the best equipment and techniques for plein air painting, and determine if outdoor painting is for you. In addition, be prepared to work from still life indoors and bring your own photographs for reference.

Kimberly will show students how to bring depth and interest to their acrylic works through layering, texturing and glazing. These techniques lend themselves to both abstraction and realism.
Experience
During this hands-on workshop, you will incorporate a variety of media with your acrylic paints, including joint compound and transparent glazes, developing layers as well as utilizing the texturing techniques of rubbing, mark making, and sanding. Together, you will explore mixed media, collage, and drawing on canvas. Plan to experiment and develop personalized content.

Kimberly Mullarkey, MFA from Northern Illinois University, is a signature member of the Colored Pencil Society of America. She completed the Botanical Art Certificate Program at the Morton Arboretum, IL. Her artwork has been exhibited widely in Illinois and France, is included in the Morton Arboretum’s rare print and art collection, and in private collections in Canada, the U.S. and France. Kimberly has been published in The Best of Colored Pencil, Vols. 4 & 5. Join Peggy, acclaimed resident artist of the Field Museum of Chicago, as you investigate the process of layering thin transparent washes on dry surfaces to create luminous color in wildlife watercolor paintings. By building color slowly, numerous small decisions are made that can be changed or refined along the way.
Experience
Begin by learning to draw from life with confidence. Peggy will demonstrate basic drawing techniques like measuring, crawling and modeling. The technique of watercolor layering (alternating complements as well as applying direct color) allows values and colors to be built risk-free. Animal and bird specimens from the Field Museum will be provided, or you may bring your own subject matter.

Peggy Macnamara is a professor at the School of the Art Institute and the Artist in Residence at the Field Museum, both in Chicago. She is also the author of several books. Over the past twenty five years, her art has related to public exhibits, architecture, artifacts and the natural history collections of the Field Museum. Experience and evaluate both traditional and contemporary techniques for preparing grounds for painting. Determine which methods are best for your personal way of working.
Experience
Matthew will demonstrate each ground, allowing time in between the demos for you to learn-by-doing, as you practice the most recent technique on your support. The following grounds will be demonstrated: Gesso on both canvas and paper, matte medium on wood and linen, gel mediums, gel medium mixtures with textural additions like sand, encaustic ground, lightweight and vinyl spackle, joint compound and molding paste on board. Depending upon the number of supports you bring to the workshop, you can expect to leave with five to ten small supports ready for painting.

Originally from Oshkosh, Wisconsin, Matthew Fischer is a MFA candidate (2011) in the School of the Arts at Columbia University in New York City. Before moving to New York, Matthew was the studio manager for the painting and drawing program at Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass Village, CO. As an undergraduate, Matthew studied printmaking, ceramics and painting at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, where he received a BFA in 2005.

The challenge of painting water is made manageable by learning specific ways to portray its many characteristics. With basic watercolor techniques such as drybrush, wet-on-wet, and layering and glazing, you will learn how to paint everything from reflections to rushing waterfalls. The use of strong composition will be emphasized as well as applying juicy colors to depict time of day, weather, or atmosphere.
Experience
You will spend some time each day on the underlying design of your painting by sketching from photographs. Your focus will be on the abstract, to encourage you to experience the immediacy of color application, emotion and design. Using a 4 x 6 inch format and inexpensive materials, anyone can learn to create watercolor sketches of excellent quality, anywhere. This is an ideal skill for journaling and traveling, enhancing the visual/creative experience of each. Add awareness to any experience by getting out from behind your camera and interacting with your environment.
Experience
Kath teaches you to complete your sketches in twenty-five minutes, as you learn techniques that can be done on a cruise ship, while standing in line, or during a quick cup of coffee. Gain experience in landscape, still life and people sketching. Days one and two are primarily indoors, day three is outdoors in Fish Creek, weather permitting. Critiques are held after every exercise. No previous experience is needed.

Kath Macaulay has had numerous one woman shows, including an exhibition of 56 paintings depicting National Parks in the western U.S., sponsored by both the U.S. and Mexican governments. Develop new skills in creating texture, line and color fields in abstract oil paintings. You will experiment with a variety of tools to create multi-layered works using cold wax medium, tube oil paint, paint sticks and powdered pigments; brushes will play only a minor role.

You will work on 7 to 8 separate panels, choosing to either integrate them into a multiple panel piece, or as individual works. In this approach to painting, the outcome is dependent on the painting process itself. Each morning, Shelby will demonstrate her approach to specific subject matter: architecture, water scenes, or forested land. She will also show how to add people to your scenes, utilizing your personal photos as reference. The remainder of the day you will paint, with lots of one-on-one attention from Shelby. You can expect to create a painting a day--and to have fun!
