The Narrative in Printmaking
Debora Oden
Workshop ID: PD1019
Date: Wed-Sat • June 30, July 1-2-3
Time: 9am-4pm
Medium: Oil-based Inks, Mixed Media • Level: Open to All Levels
Member Tuition: $475 + materials fees
Non-Member Tuition: $500 + materials fees
Concept
A variety of print techniques will be presented, as students make a collection of printing plates which will form the basis of a cohesive body of work. Facility in drawing will be helpful, but it is more important that you have a sense of design and color theory, and the willingness to jump into mark-making with enthusiasm.
Experience
The first two days focus on creating fields of color with wood block prints and developing etched plates with linear and painterly elements. Then, using these tools, produce an exciting and personal body of work based on intensive printing and re-printing of your created blocks. Color will be an emphasis, as will linear elements combined with subtle stencil and color woodblock techniques.
Instructor
Debora Oden received her MFA from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and currently teaches at the Savannah College of Art and Design. Working with the printing techniques of intaglio and screen print, her work emphasizes repeated line, building rich space out of ambiguity, and shadowy structure. Her awards include a Nebraska Arts Council Individual Arts Fellowship Award, the Vreeland Award for Fine Art, and the Triennial Prize at the Egyptian International Print Trienniel in Cairo.

Printing with the Sun: Alternative Photo Processes
Patricia Delker
Workshop ID: PH1009
Date: Mon-Fri • Aug 16-20
Time: 9am-Noon
Medium: Cyanotype, Vandyke • Level: Open to All Levels
Member Tuition: $230 + materials fees
Non-Member Tuition: $255 + materials fees
See Supply List
Concept
Explore the haunting, elegant one-of-a-kind "blue" and "brown" photographic prints made without a darkroom or Photoshop, using the vintage Cyanotype and Vandyke printing processes. Both methods are contact printing processes that utilize the sun as the developing agent.
Experience
You will begin this hands-on workshop by coating watercolor paper (or other surfaces) with emulsion. Then place negatives or found objects on this surface and take your arrangement out in the sun to develop. Patricia will also teach you how to combine processes and special toning techniques. No previous photo printing experience is necessary, just a willingness to explore these pre-digital processes and have fun.
Instructor
Patricia Delker’s traditional silver gelatin prints, cyanotypes and plastic camera images have been displayed in one-person and group shows in Wisconsin, and recognized throughout the United States in juried exhibitions. Patricia has taught classes at The Center for Photography in Madison; the University of Wisconsin School of the Arts, Rhinelander; as well as photography workshops in New Orleans, LA and in Ireland.

Gyotaku: The Art of Fish Printing
John Tosto

Time: 9am-4pm
Medium: Oil-based Inks • Level: Open to All Levels
Member Tuition: $110 + materials fees
Non-Member Tuition: $135 + materials fees

Concept
Gyotaku [
gyo (fish)
taku (rubbing)], is an oriental art form, originating in the early 1800s in Japan, which uses a real fish to create a detailed image on paper or silk. With this method, true-to-life color, texture and shading of the fish emerges as a result of rubbing a selected surface over a painted or inked fish.
Experience
John will demonstrate techniques and provide a historical perspective on an art form that evolved from the documentation of a fisherman’s catch using newsprint, ink and a brush. You will use fresh, locally caught fish (provided for a materials fee) to learn traditional techniques with modern materials.
Instructor
John Tosto studied and became proficient in the Japanese fish printing technique through the Marie Selby Gardens in Sarasota, Florida. A retired psychology professor, John balances his time between Door County and Venice, Florida.
Polyester Plate Lithography
Barry Roal Carlsen
Workshop ID: PD1046
Date: Mon-Wed • Sept 13-15
Time: 9am-4pm
Medium: Oil-based Inks • Level: Open to All Levels
Member Tuition: $320 + materials fees
Non-Member Tuition: $345 + materials fees
Concept
Explore the artist-friendly process of polyester plate lithography. More direct than intaglio printing, this highly versatile method is achieved with or without a printing press. It also eliminates the chemicals, processing time, costs, and technical difficulties associated with traditional lithographic printing.
Experience
A short history of lithography will accompany a series of technical demonstrations and hands-on projects. The focus is on black-and-white images, although hand-coloring, monoprinting and color multi-plate prints may be created if time permits. Photographic imagery can be applied to the plate with a laser printer, and mixed with hand applications such as pen and ink, bold crayon or charcoal. Students with little or no printmaking experience will be able to produce 1-2 editions by the end of this workshop. Technical handouts will be provided.
Instructor
Barry Roal Carlsen received an MFA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Barry has exhibited locally, nationally and internationally. His work is in private, public and corporate collections throughout the US, among them the Wisconsin Governor’s Mansion; the Progressive Corporation, OH; and the Cranbrook Academy of Art, MI. Barry is represented in Wisconsin by Edgewood Orchard Galleries in Fish Creek, Grace Chosy Gallery in Madison, and the Aron Packer Gallery in Chicago.
