Learn to see with a painter’s eye - including judging value, color temperature, and edge variety - as Lori shares her techniques (and joy) for painting en plein air, with her bold, vibrant style. "Northern Door County is a favorite painting location. The light is amazing between two bodies of water...a little like France mixed with Wisconsin."
Experience
The workshop begins with a color mixing intensive. With a daily demonstration in oils, Lori reveals how to achieve mature brushwork, lively palette knife work and how to bring forth an emotional connection with your subject. Lori offers encouraging, individual attention to promote personal, continued artistic growth. All painting media are welcome.
Instructor
Lori Beringer’s work is strongly influenced by the Russian Impressionists. She is inspired by the simple beauty around her--be it the lyrical edge quality on a figure, or the layers of color in a fall landscape. Lori’s training includes the University of Wisconsin-Sheboygan, studio experience with Dan Gerhartz, Albert Handell, Ann Templeton and Rosemary Utzinger. Peninsula School of Art is proud to announce our inaugural Plein Air Master Class, this year taught by prominent contemporary American impressionist, Ken Auster. This prestigious workshop is intended for plein air artists who have already achieved a level of mastery of the art form but would like to further develop their personal style. Admittance to this workshop is through application. Immerse yourself in the process of painting, without expectations about producing work or the pressure to compete for awards. Enjoy the company of your peers as you push your work beyond your current comfort level.
Experience
Ken will share the techniques and passion that have brought him international recognition for creating narrative drama on canvas. Discover how to see, interpret and lay down a foundation quickly and confidently. Strong attention is paid to composition, simplification of shapes, creating atmospheric perspective, developing focal points, and balancing cool and warm colors. Ken will demonstrate in oils and provide individual guidance at your easel. There will be both personal critiques and group discussions.
Instructor
Renowned for his classic surf art, Ken moved to the forefront of American Contemporary Impressionists after his transition to plein air painting. A frequent recipient of gold medals and first place awards at juried exhibits, Ken is a signature member of the Plein Air Painters of America, a founding member of the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association, and a signature member of the California Art Club. His work has been in museum exhibits in California and Texas including the Orange County Museum of Art in Newport Beach and the Texas Museum of Art in Corpus Christi. Ken’s work is collected by some of the most respected galleries, corporations and patrons worldwide. Exploring the Landscape in Plein Air

Concept
Marla will focus on the fundamentals that are essential to the development of a successful painting: value relationships, elements of color, use of edges, and when to stop painting and why. She will share her experience with doing a ‘painting-a-day’ and the 100 variations which emerged.
Experience
Begin with bold, gestural marks, moving to slow quiet moves to make assessments and refinements. The entire painting process is covered, including: the application of materials, achieving color harmony, obtaining successful value relationships and dynamic compositions. Through short lectures and individual mentoring at your easel, she is particularly adept at making each student feel comfortable and confident. She will demonstrate with pastel, but students can also work in oil or acrylic with prior experience.

Previously a commercial illustrator, Marla Baggetta turned to landscape painting, and quickly established herself as one of the West’s leading representational painters for her compelling and sophisticated imagery. A signature member of the Pastel Society of America and the Pastel Society of Oregon, she has won numerous awards for her paintings. Learn to paint an honest, personal view of your world by learning how to accurately reflect your unique vision of the Wisconsin landscape. Marc’s purpose is not to replicate the specific or dwell on the spectacular, as much as it is to observe the specific and to discover the beauty in the seemingly unspectacular.
Experience
With Marc’s guidance, you will visualize your finished plein air painting, featuring the natural world he loves. Develop a plan, then continually and honestly evaluate each brush stroke, color, edge, line, and shape as you paint, to ensure that they are working towards your concept.
Instructor
Marc Hanson has studied with masters of painting, including Dan McCaw and Zhang Wen Xin. A naturalist at heart, Marc feels landscape painting, in both oil and pastel, is the perfect vehicle for expressing his joy for that world. His work has been described as ‘evocative and emotional.’ He is a Signature Member of The Oil Painters of America, and a founding member of Plein Air Painters West. Through Joe’s structured, ‘prismatic palette’ approach, make sense of the layered information nature offers, and effectively freeze an effect of light on the landscape. Concepts to be covered include framing out an effect of light; structuring an underpainting; working in close, clean values; employing practical pictorial construction; memory training; and how color is affected prismatically by the angle of the sun and prevailing atmospheric conditions. Experience
The workshop begins with a lecture presenting a structured approach to the landscape and capturing the poetry of the day. Learn to imply detail with an economy of brushstroke and color. You will create two plein air studies daily, with frequent critiques throughout each day. Embrace "the honesty and utility of ordinary things, the glory of nature as it is, not as we might want it to be."

Joseph Paquet, mentored by John Foote and John Osborne, is a storyteller and poet, crafting his tales of life and landscape with his brush. Concept
Cynthia, an experienced painter, teacher, and master gardener will offer her approach to capturing the fabulous and fleeting moments of plants and gardens. Plants and gardens are among the most popular topics for both traditional and contemporary painters.
Experience
Weather permitting, we will paint outdoors in beautiful local gardens for portions of each day. You will experience the best equipment and techniques for plein air painting, and determine if outdoor painting is for you. In addition, be prepared to work from still life indoors and bring your own photographs for reference.
Instructor
Cynthia Quinn paints in either oils or watercolor and is drawn to a wide variety of subject matter, including botanical (she is also a certified Master Gardener), figurative, still life and landscape. She participated in numerous national and regional juried shows, and is a signature member of the Transparent Watercolor Society of America. Cynthia teaches oil painting and garden journal classes in the Madison area.

Tom teaches with one goal: to have students learn more about plein air painting in three days than they have learned anywhere else. Students need a basic understanding of drawing, and to be able to sketch their composition with confidence. His painting style features aggressive, confident brushwork without fussing over small detail, capturing primarily the form and mood of each scene.
Experience
Tom begins with a half-day lecture/demonstration outdoors, then paint for the remainder of the day, working small enough to complete your painting in 2-3 hours. Subsequent days feature short demos and plenty of plein air painting with individualized instruction from Tom, followed by group critiques. Leave with three completed or close-to-completed paintings.

Become versed in balancing the complex elements of a painting to create a cohesive work. Develop an abstract sensibility toward the landscape, as you build from a strong visual structural integrity. Emmett will introduce the principles of solid composition and design utilizing the classical ideas of the old Masters. Beginning a painting with effective composition will be stressed over completing a work.
Experience
You will learn how to capture "the spirit of place" while painting outside with oils or pastels. Emmett will teach you how to handle your medium and equipment with confidence so you can respond to the fast-changing conditions of nature. Each day will start with a demonstration of various attitudes and approaches - from spontaneous and gestural, to formal and classical. The history of the various classifications of style will also be discussed.

A master of a loose, painterly plein air style, Greg guides you to new levels in your painting by sharing his signature techniques and tools to build successful works. Concepts to be covered include organizing elements for a successful composition, maintaining and supporting a focal point, achieving depth and atmosphere, simplification, the benefit of edges, as well as utilizing color temperature and values.
Experience
Greg will demonstrate and talk you through every step of his process. You will receive individual instruction at your easel and group critiques at the end of each day, and come away with approximately three finished paintings and three to four small studies. Greg will bring free art goodies for all students.

Learn how to create inviting, successful works by clarifying your message before beginning to paint, whether it be emotion, color, or movement, thus determining a focus for the work.
